How it works

  1. 01

    Headphones on, song in

Drop an MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG or a video file, up to 8 minutes. Use headphones, the effect needs them.

  2. 02

    Set the orbit

The song makes one circle every 8 seconds. Make it slower or faster, and choose how much room it moves in.

  3. 03

    Save the 8D version

Download a WAV with the motion built in. It plays on any headphones, no app needed.

What 8D audio is

8D audio is a song mixed so it seems to travel around your head when you listen on headphones. It is not eight dimensions of anything, the name is marketing, but the effect is real and oddly relaxing. Videos of 8D songs became a big trend for study and sleep playlists.

The trick is that your brain locates sounds from small differences between your two ears: one ear hears a sound a fraction of a millisecond earlier, a little louder, and with a slightly different tone, shaped by your head and the folds of your ear. Recreate those differences and a sound appears to come from wherever you like.

Those differences are described by head-related transfer functions, or HRTF. Browsers ship a measured set of them, and this converter uses it to place the song at every point of a circle as it turns.

How we make the song orbit

We fold the song into one source and put it on a circle around the listener, starting in front. Two smooth oscillators move it round, one for left and right and one for front and back, so the motion has no steps or jumps, at any speed.

A short, soft room follows the dry sound. It gives the ear a sense of distance and makes the movement feel like it happens in a space rather than inside your head. Turn it down for a drier, more direct 8D, up for a dreamier one.

The download is rendered from the same graph you heard, so the WAV moves exactly like the preview. It is matched to the loudness of your original and limited so it never clips.

Tips for the best 8D effect

Use headphones or earbuds. On speakers both ears hear both speakers, and the illusion collapses.

One turn every 6 to 10 seconds feels natural for most songs. Faster orbits are exciting but can tire the ear. Slow, spacious songs, ambient and lo-fi in particular, work beautifully at 12 seconds or more.

Front and back are the hardest directions for any HRTF to sell, because every head is different. Most people hear the side and rear clearly; if the front sounds a bit inside your head, that is normal.

What you get

  • 3D panning with head-related transfer functions (HRTF), not just left and right
  • The song orbits all the way round: front, side, behind, other side
  • Speed of the orbit from one turn every 2 seconds to one every 20
  • A small room around it for depth, with its own slider
  • Hear it live and switch to the original to compare
  • WAV download at the original loudness

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a song to 8D audio?

Drop the song, put on headphones and press play. It starts with one circle every 8 seconds. Adjust the speed and room, then download the WAV.

Do I need headphones for 8D audio?

Yes. The effect relies on each ear hearing something different. On speakers it sounds like a song that slowly changes tone.

Is 8D audio the same as surround sound?

No. Surround uses several speakers around you. 8D is a stereo file that tricks two ears into hearing movement, so it plays on any headphones.

What speed should the 8D rotation be?

One turn every 6 to 10 seconds suits most songs. We start at 8. Slow songs can go slower, up to 20 seconds per turn.

Will 8D work on my phone?

Yes, both the preview and the download run in a recent mobile browser. Listen with earbuds.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The song is processed by your browser and the file is saved straight to your device.

Why does the song sound more mono?

To move around you, the song becomes one source in space, so the original left and right of the mix are folded together. That is how every 8D version works.
