How it works

  1. 01

    Drop a song

Audio or video from your device: MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG, MP4 and more, up to 10 minutes (6 in HQ). The file stays on your device.

  2. 02

Let the AI isolate the voice

A neural network pulls the vocal out of the mix in your browser. Fast (Demucs v4) is an 85 MB download. HQ (BS-RoFormer) is 353 MB and cleaner. The model is kept for next time.

  3. 03

    Listen, then save

Hear the acapella alone and against the original, then download it as a WAV file.

What is an acapella extractor?

An acapella is a vocal on its own, with no music under it. An acapella extractor, also called a vocal isolator, vocal extractor or voice isolator, takes a finished song and estimates that vocal for you with a neural network. To extract vocals from a song, you drop the stereo file and you get the voice back as a separate file you can work with.

This tool is made for songs. If you want to clean the noise out of a podcast or a voice memo, a speech-enhancement tool is a better fit. It can pull a voice out of a video, but it is trained on music, not on rooms and microphones.

What to do with an acapella

Remix and edit: put the vocal over a new beat, change its tempo and key in your DAW and build a different song under it. Mashup: pair an acapella with the instrumental of another track that shares its key and tempo. Chops and samples: cut a phrase, a word or a breath and play it from a pad. Study: hear how a vocal was tuned, doubled and treated, with nothing to cover it.

You can also isolate the voice of your own demo to rework the beat under it, or to send a singer a guide track without the old arrangement.

Getting a cleaner acapella

The cleanest results start with the best source. Use a WAV or a high-bitrate file instead of a low-bitrate MP3, and pick songs with a vocal that sits clearly in front. A voice buried in loud guitars, or a heavily layered chorus, will leave more traces than a verse with a sparse backing.

Listen to the acapella alone, then switch to the original and back, so you hear what the model kept. If the instrumental comes through faintly, a gentle gate between phrases, a low cut and a de-reverb pass in your DAW will tidy it up. If you also want to check that nothing is missing, play the vocal with the instrumental from the vocal remover page: together they should sound like the song. For the cleanest vocal pick HQ: on our test song with sung vocals it left silence between the phrases where Fast left traces of the music.

How the vocal gets isolated

Fast uses Demucs v4, a hybrid transformer from Meta's AI research team. It reads the song as a waveform and as a spectrogram, and it was trained on multitrack recordings, so it learned how voices differ from drums, bass and other instruments. HQ uses BS-RoFormer, a newer band-split transformer that scores higher on public benchmarks. For each stretch of the song they predict the vocal, and the pieces are cross-faded into one smooth file.

It runs on your device. With a computer that supports WebGPU it uses the graphics card, which HQ needs, and Fast can also use the processor. It treats lead and backing vocals alike, so you get one vocal file with every voice in it. Double-tracks, harmonies and ad-libs stay together.

About rights

An acapella of someone else's song is still their work. Use this on music you own or have permission to use, and clear any release or public remix with the rights holders. Many artists and labels publish official acapellas or stems for remix contests, and those are the safest to build on.

Private, free and in beta

The vocal is isolated on your device, so the song is never uploaded and we can keep the tool free, with no sign-up, no credit counter and no daily cap. The limit is 10 minutes per song, or 6 in HQ. It is a beta: it works, it is new and it is improving. Write to info@obra.art if you have a song it handles badly.

What you get

  • Isolates the lead and backing vocals of a song
  • Neural network that runs in your browser: Demucs v4 in Fast, BS-RoFormer in HQ. Your song is not uploaded
  • HQ engine for the cleanest acapella we can make (needs WebGPU)
  • Compare the acapella with the original before you save
  • Lossless WAV at 44.1 kHz, 24-bit or 16-bit
  • Gives you the instrumental and the other stems too
  • No sign-up, no credits, no daily limit

Frequently asked questions

Is this vocal isolator free?

Yes. It is free, with no sign-up, no card and no credits, and there is no daily limit. It is in beta.

Is my song uploaded?

No. The isolation runs in your browser on your own device, so the song stays on it. The first time, your browser downloads the AI model (85 MB for Fast, 353 MB for HQ) and the code that runs it from public hosts. Your audio is not part of that.

How clean is the acapella?

Usually clean enough to remix, practice with or study, and cleaner with HQ. Reverb, backing vocals, effects and instruments that sound like a voice can leave faint traces. Songs with a clear vocal up front give the cleanest results.

Is Fast or HQ better for an acapella?

Fast uses Demucs v4: an 85 MB download, a graphics card or your processor, songs up to 10 minutes. HQ uses BS-RoFormer: a 353 MB download, a newer model that was cleaner on our test song, WebGPU on a computer, songs up to 6 minutes, and it takes longer. Both give you the vocal on its own.

Can I get the instrumental as well?

Yes. After the split you can download the instrumental, which is everything except the vocals, or each stem on its own. The vocal remover page puts the instrumental first.

Are lead and backing vocals separated from each other?

No. All voices go into one vocal file. We do not separate lead from backing vocals, and harmonies and doubles stay together.

Can I use it to clean the voice in a podcast or an interview?

It is made for music, so it is not the best tool for that. It can pull a voice out of a video with background music, but for hiss, room noise or hum a speech-enhancement tool will do a better job.

What format is the acapella?

A WAV file, 44.1 kHz stereo, in 24-bit by default or 16-bit if you prefer a smaller file. It is lossless, so you can edit and process it freely in your DAW.

Why is there still a bit of music in my acapella?

The model estimates the vocal, it does not read the original multitrack, so some of the music can stay in it, especially where instruments share the same frequencies as the voice. A gate and an EQ in your DAW usually hide it. A higher-quality source file helps too, and so does HQ.

Can I use an acapella in my remix or release?

The vocal still belongs to the people who made the song. You can use it to practice and to learn, but to release or share a remix you need permission from the rights holders. This is general information, not legal advice.

Does it work on a phone or with a video?

Yes to both, with limits. A phone has less memory, so long songs can be slow or stop, and HQ is only offered on a computer. If your browser can play a video, we take its sound and isolate the voice from that. Links to videos are not supported, only files.
