Protoculture is the production alias of Cape Town–based South African producer, DJ, sound designer, and label founder Nate Raubenheimer. Best known for melodic progressive trance and progressive house with psychedelic roots, he has spent two decades building a catalog that moves between early Cape Town psytrance textures, Armada-era uplifting trance, and the warmer progressive sound he now pushes on his own imprint Marula Music. Armin van Buuren has praised that “everything he touches turns to musical gold,” and his tracks have been played by Armin van Buuren, Paul Oakenfold, BT, Ferry Corsten, and even Bryan Adams. Beyond releasing and touring (Tomorrowland, Fuji Rock, Glastonbury, Ministry of Sound, Ushuaïa Ibiza), he designs factory presets for u-he, Xfer, UVI, Plugin Alliance, Sonic Academy, and Black Octopus, and is a Certified Bitwig Partner and educator. His latest single “Frequent Flyers” (Marula Music, June/July 2026) samples John Gillespie Magee’s poem “High Flight,” tying psychedelic atmosphere to progressive trance momentum.
