Jerk is the Brooklyn-based project of composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Joni Kinney, exploring the liminal space where jazz, hip-hop, and R&B meet. Drawing from Charlie Parker and Gene Ammons through 70s fusion figures like Don Blackman and Patrice Rushen to beat culture icons J Dilla and Madlib, Kinney blurs hip-hop beats with instrumental jazz compositions across saxophone, flute, guitar, bass, Rhodes, and synth. Releases on DeepMatter Records — including Mood Swings, Some Cosmic Shift, and the 2025–2026 narrative EP cycle as night falls / as day breaks — have earned support from Huey Morgan on BBC 6 Music, Jazz FM, Rinse FM, Stereofox, and Somewhere Soul. With over 110 tracks in catalog and a May 2026 release of as day breaks alongside drummer Martine Wade, Jerk continues evolving beyond the beatmaker tag into electroacoustic jazz, funk grooves, and soulful daylight soundtracks built for both headphones and live rooms.
