Jefre Cantu-Ledesma is an American ambient and experimental musician based in New York State, born and raised in Texas and shaped by years in San Francisco's experimental music underground. He co-founded the influential drone and ambient label Root Strata, was a founding member of the post-rock outfit Tarentel, and has released solo records on Type Records and Mexican Summer — one of Brooklyn's most respected independent labels. For over twenty years his work has explored the liminal space between sound and silence, blending guitar, modular synthesizer, and acoustic instrumentation into sublimely minimal compositions. His 2025 album Gift Songs on Mexican Summer is perhaps his most realized statement — five transcendent compositions rooted in spiritual practice, drawing from Shaker gift drawings and the natural world, released to widespread critical acclaim and named Album of the Month by multiple platforms. He has collaborated with Grouper (as Raum), Oneohtrix Point Never, and Félicia Atkinson, and his Root Strata label has been a foundational platform for American experimental music.
