David Rawlings is an American guitarist, singer, and record producer born in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, and based in Nashville, Tennessee. He is best known for his decades-long musical partnership with Gillian Welch, producing and co-recording every one of her critically acclaimed albums at their own Acony Records studio. Rawlings has produced work for Old Crow Medicine Show, Dawes, and Willie Watson, and has contributed as a musician and arranger to albums by Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes, and Robyn Hitchcock. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song for 'When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings' (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs). His 2024 album 'Woodland' with Gillian Welch won the Grammy Award for Best Folk Album in 2025 — making them the only duo to win the award twice. Known for his distinctively warm flatpicking style on a 1935 Epiphone Olympic archtop, Rawlings is a defining voice of modern American roots music and one of Nashville's most respected producer-musicians.
