He began making beats in 2006 after reconnecting with jazz and underground hip-hop during graduate school, citing MF DOOM, Little Brother, and People Under the Stairs as formative influences. His sample-heavy production fuses soul, jazz, and rock textures with the boom bap and 2006-era underground sound, blending soulful samples with intricate rhythms and deep musical-history references. He has produced extensively for and alongside artists including Mach-Hommy, Armand Hammer, ELUCID, Navy Blue, Fly Anakin, Blu, Vic Spencer, and ANKHLEJOHN, and runs his own imprint BlackKidsProductions, which released the vinyl edition of Otherwise a Blur with blackchai in 2024.
